They are classified as "basic" or "non-essential", with the essential amino acids not being able to be produced by the body and having to be supplemented by diet to maintain overall good health. Inadequate intake of essential amino acids increases the body's need for non-essential amino acids, either through diet or supplementation. L-Glutamine is the most common amino acid and is found in large amounts in muscle. Essentially, about 60% of the total amount of amino acids in muscle is glutamine. It is considered a non-essential amino acid (because it is produced by the body), but as it provides fuel to the muscles, sometimes more glutamine is required, which cannot be produced in sufficient quantities. For example, during strenuous exercise, glutamine stores decrease as the body becomes more tense and more glutamine is needed in the muscles and tendons. In this case, to minimize muscle breakdown, we must take glutamine from the diet or through supplements.
